Khanty-Mansiysk, capital of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug, is situated in Western Siberia on the river Irtysh, only 15 km from the confluence with the river Ob. It is 1076 km by road from Tyumen and 2759 km from Moscow . The town is built on seven pine clad hills and is reminiscent of Scandinavian resorts.

Khanty-Mansiysk is a town with a unique, even for the 21 st century, social infrastructure. According to a decision of the authorities, all industrial production was moved out of the town. The surrounding taiga forest is a national park of Siberia . Here exists a rare combination of urbanism and ecological purity . The taiga spreads for hundreds of kilometers in all directions from the town.
